City of Winfield Transmission Upgrades in Kansas

A Resiliant Transmission Grid

In a unique arrangement, the City of Winfield, Kansas and GridLiance co-own the transmission facilities that help serve power to residents and business customers, while also providing reliability benefits to the region. Since entering into the joint ownership agreement, the two parties have collaborated on a series of upgrades to improve transmission service in the region and harden the system against severe flooding. Two of the projects involved transmission lines that cross the Walnut River, which were threatened by riverbank erosion and in danger of being washed away due to significant river flooding. The third project was required by Southwest Power Pool (SPP) to improve regional system reliability and required rebuilding three miles of transmission line.
